Restaurant Review - Le Fumet

It will only accept reservations - no walk ins, please, and you have to reserve a week ahead of time, no last minute reservations... They do not take credit cards, cash only, and please bring your own wine, and they are only open weekends. How can a restaurant hope to survive with all those restrictions! Somehow, Le Fumet in Farnham does!

Keith had attempted to make reservations at this establishment without success several times, but finally, yesterday, we had our valentine dinner date there. The restaurant is located in a turn of the century home in "downtown Farnham". It used the be the Farnham Pharmacist's home (upstairs) and Pharmacy (downstairs) way back when. The house is absolutely gorgeous, with high ceilings, brick walls, and wooden floors. We were seated upstairs in quiet corner next to the window. The atmosphere perfect for a quiet tête-à-tête! The waitress opened our bottle of red wine and poured us a glass. The menu surprised me, it is à la carte only, meaning that you have a choice of 1 each out of 3 appetizers, 2 entrées, 8 different main courses, and 5 desserts. All the food is local, as in local farms, orchards, etc.. We both chose the "velour de fleur" soup - a cream of cauliflower which was absolutely divine, then we both went for the Camembert chutney plate - all I can say is wow! For the main course, I had the pork and Keith had the duck - I don't remember the fancy names. The food was so well presented, and so delicious! We both agreed that this fared better than a $200 meal at Gibby's in downtown Montreal. So that is why this restaurant is so ostentatious! For dessert, Keith had the best Crème Brulée he has ever had, and I had a few bites of a dark chocolate cake. All and all, it was wonderful. We talked and reconnected for over 2 hours over fine food and great wine (we brought a really good wine to accompany all this). The cost? Not given away, but without the additional cost of the wine, it came under $70.00. We certainly will not be dining there every weekend, nowadays, who can afford it! But once a year - for sure!

All and all, a great evening! Too bad that today, Valentines day, Keith had to leave right after breakfast for a long haul to the states. I will not be going to the concert alone tonight. I told my boss as soon as I found out about Keith's trip, so the tickets were offered to someone else.

And that all she wrote....Happy Valentines day to all!
