A work in progress.

My first idea for this  blog title was "the little project that keeps on growing". but that is not quite accurate. This started at the onset as a big project, and it hasn't yet stopped growing!  I am talking about my kitchen - yes the kitchen that I have wanted to renovate so badly for the last 3 years.

It all started in April, when my sister suggested that I didn't have to spend that much money to redo the kitchen "just repaint the cupboards" she suggested, " and maybe put in a new counter". It was an excellent idea!  Keith & I decided that since money was rare - we would setlle for that.

This is the original kitchen circa 2007
But.... since the cupboard doors where old and damaged beyond repair, we ordered a whole new set of cupboard doors off the internet. They arrived (looking perfect and Keith proceeded to paint them (3 coats of paint each side plus sanding between coats). Between painting the doors, he emptied, repaired, repainted the cabinets.  My contribution in all this was mainly monetary - in order to afford the new doors, I took a one week contract at my old job during my summer vacation. While I was working during my vacation, Keith was working away at the kitchen.  With the newly refurshed cabinets the kitchen was starting to look good, but the counter was a real problem. We shopped for new counters and finally decided on a granite counter (more extra hours on weekends for Sue) Once we purchased the counter - well gee, can't leave the old dented stainless steel sink in - need a new sink. Might as well get a sink worthy of our nice new counter....  Then, of course, the backsplash tiles needed to be replaced, but with  a lovely granite counter, you need to put up something that is also worthy of it. Since the project had now spilled well into the fall, and work on it had slowed to a crawl due to lack of time, we waited until just a couple of weeks ago to order the tiles - after all, no use in having tiles sitting around costing us interest on our credit card.  So, November comes around, and now I am tired of having a half finished kitchen, but I love the result so far. I guess Keith is equally tired, cause he decided after working through 2 weekends on the road to take a few days off and concentrate on the project.  Finally, all the doors are hung, the counter & sink are in place - time to put up the tiles right? Not!  No, time to tear down the entire wall separating the kitchen and the dining room.  The result is dramatic and wonderful, but now, we need to repaint the entire dining room - and  who knows from there where the project will continue....I guess it really is a work in progress..  Pictures of new and improved kitchen to follow - stay tuned!
