Just a little pep talk to myself

This stuff seems so trivial to me in the larger scale of things, but it makes up my "raison d'être" (reason for being - for all you Anglos) at the office. What I mean is that spending hours and hours pouring over data looking for discrepancies in the financial records only serves to reassure the company administrators and owners - it doesn't serve any grand purpose towards world peace or help cure the greenhouse effect -(although a little warming up would actually be nice thank you....). At the end of the day, what have I accomplished? The books are balanced. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. What a banal job! It would probably be more fun to do the accounting for a movie - or some more glamorous company - but really, it ends up being the same job no matter what - numbers, numbers, numbers. And once the financial statements are handed out and taxes are paid - they get filed away, and on to the following year.

I suppose that any job seen in this sense can make someone want to just give up, but I have to keep in mind that it's all these banal and every day stuff that makes a company thrive and survive. Without balanced books, banks won't lend, Governments will come sneaking around to audit, administrators won't know where the company is headed. Besides, what the heck am I complaining about - this is a job, this is a job that I get PAID to do. Good, steady employment - a lot of people would love to have my job. There, I feel better already. Now, back to work...

  1. You're right... the same job even for a glamorous enterprise would still entail slaving over books in an unglamorous office well away from the cameras and alleged fun.

Fundamentally, you like what you do and are good at it. That's a big plus. So many people drag themselves out of bed each day to spend 8 hours doing something they actively dislike.

On the other hand, you've always had the ability to jump 100% into all kinds of ventures and make a go of them. I will never forget the beauty of your gift basket business!

  2. Sometimes it can all seem so inconsequential and meaningless. Sometimes it can all seem full of promise.

Whatever 'it' is, it is all very small in the end. Keep it light, keep it fun, and above all keep it enjoyable, whatever it is.

    Happy Vacation time!!!
