How does one collect a sterile urine sample from a small female dog??? Lady has just finished her treatment for a urinary tract infection and the vet gave me one of those little sealed plastic container (exactly like the ones we have to pee into when we go for tests) and told me to bring her a urine sample once the antibiotics were finished. Argh! This ought to be interesting... can you just imagine me running after Lady outside with my little container trying to catch her in the "act"!

I found out she had an infection because she needed to pee all the time - would go outside and scootch down to pee 10 to 15 times (without much luck) and look uncomfortable (she never ever complains). Then, she had a little accident on the kitchen floor and as I wiped it up with a white paper towel (my kitchen floor is dark blue) I saw that there was blood in the urine. Easy enough, called our local vet who took her in for the day and got a urine sample in some way which confirmed my diagnosis. Fourteen days of antibiotics and here I am with my little container. I know! I'll wait till Keith comes home!

  1. Actually, it's urinary "tract". Thus spake the Grammar Nazi.

Good luck to you both getting that sample.

  2. No sample collected yet - she's on to us and won't pee while we are watching......but the image of Keith running behind her trying to position a low rise bowl in the right place just as she is about to pee is just so funny :o)
