It’s that
time of the year again, the time when leaves are changing colour and falling,
the evenings are cool and sometimes downright cold, and that time when we all
wonder ‘’where did the summer go?’’ It seemed to take so long to settle in, and
now it’s already gone. October.
Actually, October is one of my favorite month.
I love the cool air, the crisp dry leaves under my feet; the smell of
the fallen leaves in the forest. I just wish October lasted a little bit longer…
We all wish
that what is enjoyable to us would last just a little bit longer don’t we? And yet, what we often fail to realise, is
that what is most enjoyable to us is most often the company of our loved one and
our friends. A beautiful fall day is made
even better when spent in the company of your family, your lover, or your
friends. Even a cold rainy day doesn’t
seems quite as awful when you are not alone facing it. And for
this to happen, we need to give something of ourselves. Some of us do it
easily, and readily and with pleasure. Some consider it precious and are wont to part
with it, wanting to keep it for themselves, while others will simply forget, not caring one way or the other whether this
gift could brighten their own lives as well as others. It’s not hard to figure out, the best gift
you can give or receive is the gift of time.
Time spent making that phone call you have been promising your sister,
time spent visiting your elderly parent in the hospital, time you give just by
dropping by your friend’s home for a cup of tea, time to sit down and write
that heartfelt thank you note you know you should have written a month
ago. Yes, we are all too busy to give
much of our time. But it’s autumn, and the summer is gone, and I am reminded
that time has a way of sneaking by, ticking away without warning. We often discover
too late that we have missed out on something special because we thought we had
all the time in the world and procrastinated, while time flew by right under
our noses. No, we don’t have all the time in the world, that is for sure, but
we do have enough time to give, not to the office (no one says they wished they
had spent more time at the office on their deathbed) but to our friends, our
families, our loved ones. Instead of
spending 30 minutes playing that silly computer game, pick up the phone and
make that call – you will make someone’s day.
Instead of watching that dumb re-run of a TV show you’ve already seen
twice, take the time to write that special e-mail to someone who will be
delighted to hear from you. Instead of spending
the evening making mundane comments on Facebook – put your coat on and go visit
the person who will never forget what a great gesture you will be making. Re-kindle your old friendships – take the
time, make the time – it’ll be worth it!
In the end, the winner will be you!
Making someone else’s day is always a great way to spend your time. Come on now – just a little of your time, and you can
light up someone’s life. Now my turn, I need to make a phone call...
